Kesho Njema: Empowering Youth for Climate Action and Safer Communities

Kesho Njema: Empowering Youth for Climate Action and Safer Communities

Under the Kesho Njema Project implemented by MyLEGACY with support from the Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania, the training brought together students from 25 schools across Kunduchi, Wazo, and Kawe wards, reaching 775 students and engaging 26 teachers to build their capacity in energy conservation, climate action, and gender-responsive environmental leadership.

In September and October 2025, MyLEGACY conducted a series of interactive student training sessions aimed at raising awareness, inspiring leadership, and encouraging students to actively protect the environment while promoting safer, more resilient communities.

Success Story: Creativity and Climate Leadership from Kisauke & Twiga Schools

A highlight of this phase came from students at Kisauke and Twiga Secondary Schools. During the training, students were tasked with creating visual illustrations to show how they could share knowledge with peers and their communities about energy conservation and environmental protection.

The results were outstanding.

Students produced thoughtful, creative, and impactful illustrations demonstrating:

  • Practical ways households can save energy

  • How students can influence peers through clubs, posters, and peer-to-peer learning

  • Everyday habits that support environmental sustainability

  • The role of young people in driving positive change

These illustrations reflect a deep understanding of climate challenges and highlight the students’ readiness to become ambassadors of environmental awareness. Their confidence in teaching others—both at school and at home—demonstrates the project’s core mission: transforming knowledge into meaningful action.

Development of EAC Awareness Materials

To ensure continuous learning, MyLEGACY also developed and designed EAC (Energy Awareness & Conservation) educational materials.
These resources will help schools maintain ongoing awareness and practical application of climate and energy conservation long after the training sessions are completed.

Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

Empowering Young Minds. Protecting Their Rights. Driving Systemic Change.

At MyLEGACY, we believe that access to accurate, age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education is not a privilege—it is a right. Our SRHR programme is not just about information; it is a transformational movement that empowers youth, dismantles harmful gender norms, and champions the rights and dignity of every child, especially girls.

We combine education, structural reform, and grassroots mobilization to create safer, more inclusive school environments. By training both students and educators, we equip them with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to make informed decisions, advocate for their rights, and foster cultures of consent, respect, and bodily autonomy.

Menstrual Health & Dignity

Recognizing that menstrual health is central to girls’ education, MyLEGACY has built and upgraded girl-friendly WASH infrastructure in schools to ensure private, safe, and clean menstrual hygiene spaces that reduce absenteeism and restore dignity.

We also integrate practical skills training by teaching students and teachers how to produce reusable sanitary pads, a solution that improves product access, promotes eco-sustainability, and supports economic empowerment and community resilience.

MyLEGACY and Habitat For Humanity Tanzania Constructed Girl-Friendly Toilets in Kinondoni Schools

MyLEGACY successfully completed the construction and handover of 5 toilet buildings, each equipped with a total of 20 pits, to 5 schools in Kinondoni District, Dar es salaam Region, Tanzania. The primary goal of this initiative was to improve the learning environment and provide support to female students, particularly during menstruation. In addition to the construction of the toilet buildings, the project also included the provision of essential bathroom accessories such as buckets, basins, toilet brushes, and water scoops. The schools that benefited from this project are Daniel Chongolo Secondary School, Kisauke Secondary School, Maendeleo Secondary School, Twiga Secondary School, and Mtakuja Primary School. The success of this project would not have been possible without the invaluable support of Habitat for Humanity Tanzania (HFHT).

The handover of the toilets was a key component of our community mobilization efforts, which involved engaging various stakeholders at the community, government, and school management levels. By raising awareness about the importance of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities and their benefits, we were able to garner support for creating a safe and conducive learning environment for all students, especially girls during their menstruation period, in order to help them realize their full potential.

MyLEGACY WASH CLUBS IN 28 SCHOOLS

MyLEGACY WASH CLUBS are a vital initiative established by MyLEGACY in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Tanzania (HFHT) to promote Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices in schools and communities. These clubs serve as a means to empower students with knowledge and skills related to WASH issues, including hygiene, sanitation, and access to clean water. The clubs aim to install behavioural change in students and, by extension, in their communities. Below is a comprehensive overview of My LEGACY WASH CLUBS, covering what they are, why they were established, where they are located, what they do, and what has been accomplished through these clubs up to now.

MyLEGACY WASH Clubs were established to address several critical objectives:
1. Empowering Students: These clubs aim to empower students with knowledge and skills related to WASH issues, including hygiene, sanitation, and safe water practices. This education is intended to lead to improved personal hygiene and better health outcomes.
2. Promoting Behavioural Change: The clubs focus on instilling a positive change in behaviour among students and, subsequently, within the wider community. By educating students about the importance of WASH practices, the clubs hope to create a ripple effect, where students become ambassadors of clean and safe practices.
3. Community Engagement: Beyond the school environment, MyLEGACY WASH Clubs engage with the community. They conduct outreach activities to sensitize community members about the significance of WASH practices, such as handwashing, sanitation, and proper water management.
4. COVID-19 Response: The establishment of these clubs coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a platform for disseminating crucial information on COVID-19 prevention and hygiene measures to both students and the community.

MyLEGACY WASH Clubs are currently established in 28 schools located in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania.
These schools are distributed across Kawe, Kunduchi, and Wazo Hill wards within the district, which are Mbezi Beach Primary, Kawe A Primary, Kawe B primary, Kisauke Primary, Pius Msekwa Primary, Kunduchi Primary, Mivumoni primary, Mivumoni Secondary, Mtakuja Secondary, Mtakuja Primary, Ununio Primary, Mirambo Primary, Daniel Chongolo Secondary, Ukwamani Secondary, Tumaini Primary, Lugalo Primary, Salasala Primary, Benaco Primary, Nakasangwe Primary, Pwani Primary, Jangwani Primary, Kisauke Secondary, Kondo Secondary, and Kawe Ukwamani Primary, Kawe Ukwamani Secondary, Mtongani Primary, Maendeleo Secondary, and Twiga Secondary School.

MyLEGACY WASH Clubs engage in a range of activities and initiatives aimed at achieving their objectives:
1. Educational Activities: The clubs educate students on various WASH issues, including proper handwashing techniques, sanitation practices, and the importance of clean water.
2. Outreach Programs: These clubs conduct outreach activities in the community, targeting crowded areas such as bus stops, local markets, and public service centres. They promote cleanliness and hygiene practices among community members.
3. Club Action Plans: Each club develops action plans outlining their activities for specific months. These plans encompass sanitation, outreach activities, and WASH- based training sessions.
4. Club Leadership: Club members elect leaders who are responsible for overseeing club activities. This fosters leadership skills among students.
5. COVID-19 Response: The clubs actively participate in COVID-19 awareness campaigns, providing information about the virus, prevention measures, and vaccination.
6. Artistic Approaches: Some clubs use creative means like songs and dramas to raise awareness about WASH practices, making their messages engaging and memorable.

Since March 2021, several key accomplishments have been observed since the establishment of MyLEGACY WASH Clubs:
1. Formation of 26 Clubs: MyLEGACY successfully established 26 WASH clubs in schools across Kinondoni District.
2. Club Membership: A total of 860 students have joined these clubs, with 450 girls and 410 boys actively participating.
3. Empowerment of students to take leadership roles in advocating for improved WASH facilities.
4. Community Engagement: The clubs have engaged with the community through outreach activities, promoting better WASH practices beyond the school premises.
5. COVID-19 Response: The clubs have played a crucial role in COVID-19 awareness campaigns, providing education on preventive measures and dispelling myths related.
to the virus.
6. Behavioural Change: Many students now practice WASH activities as part of their daily routine, and approximately 75% of students wash their hands while following proper hygiene steps.
7. Enhanced learning environments due to improved sanitation and hygiene practices.
