The Day of the African Child is celebrated every year on June 16 th since 1991, when it was first initiated by the OAU Organisation of African Unity. This day honors the memories of students who were massacred in the Soweto Uprising in South Africa, in 1976 for protesting against education injustice and inequality in the apartheid regime. Similarly, the day celebrates the African child as well as the efforts that have been put in place to protect the African child from all forms of discrimination and violence.
